Mingo Central Miners golf team defeats Belfry Pirates
WHARNCLIFFE, W.Va. - The Mingo Central Miners golf team continued their winning ways to start the 2018 season as they easily defeated Belfry High School in a match last week at Twisted Gun Golf Club in Wharncliffe, West Virginia.
The Miners had seven golfers compete and Belfry five but only count the top four scores from each team were counted to decide a winner. Mingo Central defeated the Pirates by a total of 27 strokes, 205-242.
Nathan May shot the low round on the day for the Miners as he finished the tough course in only 46 strokes. Seth Jude followed him at 52 and Nathan's twin brother Jacob was next at 53.
Rounding out the top four for Central was Kaleigh Baisden who shot a 54. Baisden became the first female golfer in the history of the school when she came out for the team this year.
Kaedan Wiley also shot a 57 for the Miners while Johnathan Patrick shot a 59 and Donald Robinson shot a 68.
Belfry's top four consisted of Austin Hager who shot a 58, Austin Stafford 60, Brad Canterbury 61, and Mason Varney who shot a 63. Caleb Spears also shot a 64 for the Pirates.
The Miners also lost their first match of the season last week in a contest at "The Gun" to the Westside Renegades.
The Renegades top four finished the course in only an impressive 160 strokes. The Miners did improve their score by 11 strokes from the match against Belfry but still came up short finishing with 194.
Seth Jude shot the low round this time for Central as he finished in 44 strokes. Jacob May followed him with 46 and Kaleigh Baisden shot her low score of the year at 49. Johnathan Patrick rounded out the top four as he shot a 55.
The Miners are coached this season by Josh Johnson and are 3-1 so far in match play.
