Changes to Instructional Calendar and Tutoring Opportunities

Instructional Calendar and Tutoring Opportunities

This is an important announcement from the Superintendent of Mingo County Schools to the staff, students, and families of the Mingo County School District. Snow and the devastating flooding resulted in many missed days of instruction for our students. We are so grateful for the return of our students and staff and we are meeting the challenge to overcome the loss of instructional time that will prepare our students before entering their next grade levels. State law requires 180 days of instruction. When NTI or remote days for weather are depleted, and when we can no longer use days from extra minutes attended, the district must change certain non-attendance days to instructional days. This has resulted in the following changes to our calendar.

The Spring Break days of March 24, 25, 26, and 27, are now instructional days. Friday, March 28th will remain a non-attendance day, giving students and staff a three-day weekend. Families who made plans for the extended break, and will not be able to change them, will need to write parent notes for any absences. Assignments need to be made up. Staff members will need to follow normal attendance protocols for any employee absences. Good Friday, April 18th, will still be a non-attendance day.

The OS days at the end of the year, which are not usually attendance days, will now be instructional days. Those days are June 6, 9, and 10. The last two days for teachers will occur on June 11 for Faculty Senate, and June 12 for prep/closeout. These changes will allow us to reach 177 days. The district is seeking a waiver for the remaining three days.

The District is committed to providing tutoring and instructional support services for students to overcome learning loss. Our plan has two components. First, intensive intervention after school sessions for all grade levels will occur March 24-26 (Monday-Wednesday) and March 31-April 2 (Monday-Wednesday). Snack and transportation on main roads will be available. Second, we will be offering tutoring services, provided by teachers during their scheduled planning periods, throughout each attendance day from March 24 through May 2nd. Teachers and administrators will manage this program. It is our hope that these support opportunities will close the learning gaps and skill deficiencies that result from missed instructional time.

Our students, families, and staff members are important to us, in matters of learning and well-being. Individual schools are still taking calls regarding any remaining flood-recovery needs. The school officials will relay this information to the District in the event we may offer further assistance. Thank you to families for sending us your children to educate and support. Thank you to our staff members for working together toward the success of our students.
