As we wrap up our "Miners Keep Digging" summer series, we want to recognize some of the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure Mingo Central is ready to welcome our students back each year—our incredible custodial staff.
Throughout the summer, Bobby, our Custodian IV, has dedicated countless hours to painting bathrooms, refreshing railings, and completing cosmetic improvements to make our school look its best. His hard work and attention to detail help create an environment our students can be proud of.
This week, the rest of our custodial team returned and immediately got to work waxing floors, cleaning classrooms, and making sure every hallway shines in preparation for the first day of school.
While many people enjoy their summer break, our custodians spend theirs making sure Mingo Central is safe, clean, and welcoming for every student who walks through our doors.
Thank you to our entire custodial team for your dedication and hard work. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and Mingo Central is a better place because of you.

Throughout the summer, our mental health counselors continued to connect with and support our students, ensuring that they had someone to talk to and resources to help them navigate life's challenges.
Whether it was through school-based services at Mingo Central or community partnerships, our students were reminded that they are never alone and that support is always available.
We are incredibly grateful for the dedicated professionals who invest in the well-being of our students each and every day. Their work helps our students build confidence, resilience, and the skills needed to succeed both in school and in life.

Today we're recognizing several MCHS students who volunteer with the local Kids NewView Group, led by Rebecca Farmer. The group recently came together for its annual Duck Race, a fundraiser that supports the WeCan program.
We're proud to recognize our Miners who are involved with Kids NewView: Sophie Taylor (alumna), Eli Hagy, Kylie Dotson, Kaiden Clark, JJ Hatfield, and Kainan Endicott.
Kids NewView brings together students from four local high schools—Mingo Central, Logan, Westside, and Man—to serve their communities, build leadership skills, and make a positive difference.

Learning never stops for our Miners!
This week, Mr. Joe Hunt represented our school at the Engaging with Revolutionary History Fellowship in Austin, Texas, hosted by Retro Report at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library.
Alongside nearly 50 educators from across the nation, Mr. Hunt explored primary source documents, learned from nationally recognized historians, and collaborated with fellow teachers to discover new ways to bring American history and civics to life in the classroom. Sessions included examining Cold War artifacts, national security documents, and the connections between historical events and today's world.
Experiences like this strengthen the learning opportunities we provide for our students and reflect our commitment to continuous growth and excellence.

Rachel spent a week immersed in an experience designed for students interested in the medical field. During the camp, she had the opportunity to observe medical procedures, participate in clinical activities, and engage with physicians from various areas of healthcare.
Experiences like Camp Med allow our students to step outside the classroom, explore career possibilities, and gain valuable insight into their future goals. Rachel’s willingness to learn and explore the medical field is another example of our Miners continuing to dig deeper and reach higher.

This is an amazing achievement, with students representing 18 states and 20 competitors participating in the onsite testing event. Blake’s hard work, preparation, and knowledge helped him stand out among some of the best students in the nation.

Coach Rob and our Miners basketball team are making the most of the situation by using flex days — adapting, staying committed, and continuing to build toward another successful season. Great programs are built during moments like these, when teams find a way to improve, compete, and come together no matter the circumstances.

Over the course of a week, these Miners immersed themselves in experiences designed to build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and prepare for college and career success. Students explored college opportunities, participated in engaging team-building activities, visited a zoo, and developed the communication and self-confidence needed to succeed in whatever path they choose.

⛏️ Day 6 – Miners Never Stop Digging
At Mingo Central, summer is a season of growth—not just for our students, but for our educators as well.
We are proud to recognize Mr. Corey Hatfield, who was selected to represent Mingo County as one of only 16 educators statewide in the West Virginia Department of Education's Mountains of Evidence: Social Studies Data Literacy Integration Pilot Program.
Chosen from nominees across West Virginia, Mr. Hatfield participated in a three-day summer institute in Charleston focused on strengthening data literacy in Social Studies classrooms. The program equips teachers to integrate maps, charts, graphs, timelines, and civic data into inquiry-based lessons, helping students think critically, analyze evidence, and make informed decisions.
Over the next year, Mr. Hatfield will collaborate with educators from across the state to develop innovative instructional resources that will be shared statewide. In Year Two, he will also have the opportunity to mentor future participants, extending his impact beyond Mingo Central.
We are incredibly proud of Mr. Hatfield for representing our school and our county while helping shape the future of Social Studies instruction in West Virginia.

Summer is full of opportunities to learn, lead, and dream big—and we're proud to celebrate another Miner who is doing just that.
Congratulations to Blake Smith for being selected to attend the West Virginia Governor's School of Entrepreneurship (GSE). This prestigious program brings together some of the state's brightest students to develop leadership, creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial thinking through hands-on experiences and collaboration with business leaders and innovators.
During the program, Blake worked alongside students from across West Virginia to develop ideas, solve real-world challenges, and gain valuable insight into what it takes to turn innovation into opportunity. The experience encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills that will benefit him both inside and outside the classroom.
We are incredibly proud of Blake for representing Mingo Central and taking advantage of this outstanding opportunity. His dedication to learning and personal growth is a great example of what it means to be a Miner.

⛏️ Day 4 – Miners Never Stop Digging
Summer isn't just about preparing students—it's also about our teachers continuing to learn, grow, and bring new opportunities back to Mingo Central.
We are proud to recognize Mr. Josh Johnson, our Aerospace Engineering teacher, for being selected as one of only three lead teachers participating in the AIRWV (Aviation Innovation and Readiness West Virginia) initiative.
As part of this prestigious program, Mr. Johnson spent two weeks at the Bill Noe Flight School, working alongside aviation professionals in aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, and other aviation career fields at Yeager Airport. He also traveled by air to Tri-State Airport to tour aircraft maintenance facilities and gain firsthand experience with the aviation industry.
Now, Mr. Johnson is helping develop aviation curriculum and classroom lessons that will be implemented in five pilot counties across West Virginia, creating exciting new learning opportunities for students and helping shape the future of aviation education in our state.
We're incredibly proud of Mr. Johnson for representing Mingo Central and for continuing to invest in our students, our Career and Technical Education programs, and the future of aviation in West Virginia.

While summer means a break from the classroom, it doesn't mean our football team takes a break from getting better—or giving back.
Our Miners have been hard at work this summer, putting in countless hours through Flex Days, team camps, 7-on-7 competitions, and strength and conditioning. Every workout, every rep, and every practice is another step toward being ready for Friday nights this fall.
But being a Miner is about more than football.
This past month, our players have proudly served the Mingo County community by:
🏈 Reading with children at the Mingo County Public Library, encouraging a love of learning and showing our younger Miners that success starts in the classroom.
🏈 Volunteering at the Wellspring Family Services Summer Splash Field Day, helping with games, activities, and creating memories for families across our community.
🏈 Joining the special celebration honoring Mr. Donald Tackett Jr. in Dingess, where they were honored to be part of a meaningful community event.
We're incredibly proud of the way these young men represent Mingo Central. They understand that wearing the Miner uniform means working hard, leading by example, and serving others.
Champions are built long before kickoff—and character is built every day.

This week, Mingo Central was proud to host the Appalachian Soccer Academy, led by Mingo Central alumnus and Concord University Women's Soccer Head Coach Noah Rhodes. Coach Rhodes returned to his alma mater on July 13-14 to provide a FREE soccer clinic for young athletes from our community.
It was incredible to see so many future Miners and current student-athletes learning new skills, building confidence, and enjoying the game on our field. We are grateful to Coach Rhodes for giving back to the community that helped shape his journey and for investing in the next generation of athletes.
