Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions
1. What's the difference between parent involvement and volunteering?
Volunteering takes involvement to another level where activities include potential contact with students. Individuals are considered volunteers if they participate in activities/events where students are present. For instance, if a book fair takes place during the school day and a teacher brings the class to the fair, volunteers would have to be county-approved with a background check. After-school events, such as school dances or club activities/events also require approved volunteers with a background check.
2. Why must I have a background check to participate in volunteer activities at my child's school?
Our first priority is the safety of all students. While we appreciate, encourage, and celebrate parental involvement in our school, it's important that we avoid any situation in which a volunteer might compromise student safety.
3. Does this mean I can't be involved with the school without a background check?
Not at all. We value your participation in our school. Take advantage of open houses, curriculum nights, athletic events, school performances, and parent-teacher conferences. Talk with your child's teachers, especially if you have questions or concerns about his/her performance of class rules and expectations. We strongly encourage parents and guardians to be involved with our school's parent-teacher organization.
4. How do I sign up to be a volunteer?
Contact Christie Tilley, our county's PERC (Parent Education Resource Center) Director. She will then schedule a time for a brief training course, which will clarify expectations and guidelines for volunteers. This training will also take care of any necessary paperwork, including the background check. (ctilley@k12.wv.us; 304-235-3333 etx. 7214)
5. If I have additional questions, who should I contact?
You should first contact our principal or PERC Director.
