School of Practical Nursing
This course offers a variety of attractive career opportunities. Duties and roles may vary according to the setting. Students are thoroughly prepared to hold positions in nursing homes, doctors’ offices, hospitals, home health and private duty. As an L.P.N., you will have such direct responsibilities as giving medications and treatments, reporting and recording patients’ responses, direct bedside care, and working in a team relationship with registered nurses, and physicians.
After graduation, you will be required to pass The NCLEX Exam. The West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses reserves the right to refuse to admit applicants to the licensure examination that have been convicted of a crime, habitually intemperate, addicted to use of habit-forming drugs, or mentally incompetent.
Mingo Extended Learning Center's practical nursing program is located at 165 Bulldog Blvd., Delbarton WV 25670.
All applicants must meet the following requirements:
∙ Have a completed application on file, have high school transcript or proof of GED on file, and have 3 required references on file.
∙ Must complete a pre-entrance exam with a minimum score of 55%, determined by the Mingo Extended Learning Center School of Practical Nursing. Please register to take the test at atitesting.com. The school, during regular business hours will proctor the test. Perspective students will only have 2 attempts to acquire the composite score of 55 or better. Please refer to the MELC schedule for the available test dates.
∙ Complete a personal interview with nursing faculty and be recommended for selection, after making the minimum score of 55%.
∙ Must complete a pre-entrance physical, a PPD or chest x-ray, immunizations as recommended by the Center for Disease Control, Rubella Titer (vaccine required if negative), and a dental examination. Must complete a drug/alcohol screen scheduled by MELC. Receipt of results indicating the presence of any amount of any substance for which the student has NO legal, valid prescription and/or for a non-prescription substance not declared prior to the drug/alcohol screen shall be grounds for immediate dismissal. Applicants must submit to a State and Federal Background Check prior to admission.
∙ Have evidence of good physical and mental health. Must be physically active and able to lift 50 pounds frequently.
∙ Students must take a mandatory pre-entrance class at MELC's bootcamp which includes: Medical Math, Human Anatomy, Medical Terminology, Study Skills, and CPR. Students who have transcript verification and a grade of 80% will be exempt from the Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy sessions. Students that have an active CPR card will be exempt from the CPR portion of the class. Attendance is mandatory. Students will review basic foundation fundamentals of nursing, calculation of medication dosages, and how to improve study skills.
