• Using Value to Describe Space

Focus on a spatial progression in a drawing that has three distinct levels of space: foreground, middle ground, background. Keep in mind that you are trying to describe a deep, illusionistic space.

For your subject, arrange objects on a desk into three distinct levels of space. Think of them as monumental objects in a landscape setting. Exaggerate the scale of the various objects in order to create a vast sense of space.  You might want to assume a low eye level rather than looking straight down onto the objects; this will help deepen the spatial field. Manipulate the lighting to cast deep shadows; long shadows can lend an air of mystery. You might imagine the scene as taking place at night, so that the space behind the objects and beyond the desk will be dark and atmospheric. Keep in mind a progression of values either from light to dark as the objects extend into space, or from dark to light as they meet the horizon, the edge of the desk.

Try to establish a mood through your use of space and through your selected value range.  Aim for a gradual transition of values. Before you begin to draw, sit for several minutes looking at the objects, and in your mind's eye transform them to objects in a landscape. This meditative exercise will provide a good imaginative beginning for this assignment. Media: your preference choice on watercolor paper size 12 x 18.
