Mrs. Bryna Jewell, M. Ed.
Mrs. Jewell has been a licensed professional school counselor at Tug Valley High School for 11 years. She is an alumna of Man High School and graduated from Pikeville College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Religion. She completed a Master of Education degree in Counseling with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling from Lindsey Wilson College School of Professional Counseling and completed certification requirements for School Counseling at Marshall University.
In her pursuit of education, Mrs. Jewell played an integral part in a partnership that was held between Lindsey Wilson College SPC and Marshall University that allowed Lindsey students to take courses at Marshall University with the goal of becoming school counselors while completing their masters degree at LWCSPC. As such, five students in Mrs. Jewell's academic cohort and several students from additional cohorts at LWCSPC completed Masters of Education degrees in Counseling while also completing requirements to become certified school counselors. All five students from the initial cohort, as well as others completing those requirements, have found employment and are currently working as professional school counselors in Southern West Virginia.
Mrs. Jewell's theoretical orientation to counseling is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). While school counselors cannot provide therapy in a school setting, CBT is a framework that analyzes student behavior by looking at the thought processes of the student. She applies this philosophy in the counseling setting. She works with students to identify their needs and develop a solution-focused plan for them. This also affects the development of the comprehensive school counseling program at Tug Valley High School to ensure student success.
