Mrs. Bryna Jewell, M. Ed.
Mrs. Jewell has been a licensed professional school counselor at Tug Valley High School since 2009. She is an alumna of Man High School and graduated from Pikeville College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Religion. She completed a Master of Education degree in Counseling with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling from Lindsey Wilson College School of Professional Counseling and completed certification requirements for School Counseling at Marshall University.
Mrs. Jewell's main focus is ensuring that the needs of all students are met by providing academic, career, and social/emotional support. She gives students access to a gateway to higher education. Through College Exploration and Application Week, she works with students to guide them through the application process for college and Career/Tech Education programs. She works diligently to keep track of student credits to assist students in meeting the graduation requirements set forth by the State of West Virginia.
Mrs. Jewell's theoretical orientation to counseling is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). While school counselors cannot provide therapy in a school setting, CBT is a framework that analyzes student behavior by looking at the thought processes of the student. She applies this philosophy in the counseling setting. She works with students to identify their needs and develop a solution-focused plan for them. This also affects the development of the comprehensive school counseling program at Tug Valley High School to ensure student success.
Mrs. Jewell is a member of the Counseling Honor Society Chi Sigma Iota. She received the Academic Achievement Award from the Kentucky House of Representatives in 2009. She was honored as the Outstanding College Summit Coordinator for 2014.
