Megan Griffey Awarded BSMD Scholarship

Tug Valley High School Senior Megan Griffey makes the third TVHS student in five years to receive the prestigious Marshall University BS/MD Scholarship. The highly competitive award is only offered to ten West Virginia students each year. Recipients of the scholarship are awarded the opportunity to graduate with a Bachelor of Science from Marshall University in three years and are awarded a tuition waiver plus pre-acceptance to Marshall’s Joan C. Edwards Medical School.

When asked why she decided to pursue a degree in medicine, Megan stated “Throughout my life, I have been a firsthand witness to the impact that the lack of medical access has had on individuals in my community. I wanted to pursue this program as it will allow me to achieve my dreams of helping to bring medical access to rural areas.”

Megan being the third Tug Valley student in five years to receive the scholarship is no surprise to school advocates like TVHS Principal Dr. Ward. “…notable academic achievement is rooted in the teachers at TVHS and their commitment to principles of defining real academic achievement. We as a faculty decided real academic achievement should be based on actual learning and analysis of concepts… we created a grading system weighing summative assessment at a greater percentage of a student's grade. We also embraced a depth of knowledge approach to learning and challenged students to seek real learning instead of “playing school”. This requires "mastery" of higher-level learning objectives thus creating a thorough test of learning.”

Each year, Tug Valley continues its goal of reaching higher in student achievement. In fact, last year Tug Valley was the number one Class “A” WV school in student achievement according to U.S. News and World Reports in 2023.

Megan was asked how she feels after finally achieving her well-deserved scholarship opportunity in which she responded: “I am blessed that God has put me in this position where I have the opportunity to make a difference in other’s lives in the future. I’m extremely thankful for my family, teachers, and mentors who have played a role in helping me get into this prestigious program. Being accepted into this program means so much to me as I am one step closer to achieving my dreams.”

We at TVHS wish you the best of luck, Megan.

There is no doubt you will do great things!
